Getting There: Head South from Jasper on highway 93 towards Athabasca Falls. Take Out: You will see a pull out on the right hand side of highway 93 that has a clear view of the river. it is well used as it is the raft take out. Please park out of the way so that the local raft companies will still have access. Put in: Turn in to the falls viewing area and continue down the road and across a bridge over the Athabasca. The road will bend to the right and get a bit rough. On the right hand side you will see a pull out/parking area. Parallel, on the left, there is another parking area. In order to stay out of the raft companies way, park on the left side. Walk down the dirt road to the base of Athabasca Falls and head into the first rapid right away. The class II action starts immediately and will have you deep into the canyon in no time. The scenery on the way through the canyon is amazing. You will be able to see a number of peaks such as Kerkeslin, Hardisty, Whirlpool, Fryatt as well as Brussels and Christie. Make sure to look around in between rapids. Stop on the way to practice stern squirts and to enjoy the fact that there is no one around for miles. Sean Allen |
