Fraser Festival - June 30th - July 1st - 2007
We are pleased to announce that Fraser Festival will be run once again this year, this time over July long weekend.
When:
Arrive Friday sometime at the campground. We will get on the Raft Run on Saturday and for those up to it, the Upper and the Canyon. The Sunday will likely involve more trips down the Raft-Run and a few trips down the Upper. A trip to the Canoe might be in order as well for those who like continuous Grade 4.
What:
Fraser Festival is a classic grass roots river rendezvous. Basically it consists of a nice group campground where paddlers meet, hangout and organize shared shuttles on the numerous awesome sections of the Fraser River and its tributaries. The cost is 20 dollars which covers camping fees for Friday and Saturday night as well as the AWA fees. Bring plenty of food and beer as there isn't much at the campground. There is a cafe at Mount Robson where one can grab a mean burger. There is also Valemount about 35km away for more services.
Who:
The Fraser caters to all ability levels. The Upper is likely going to be Grade 4-5 this year since flows are looking like they will be high. It is some of the best whitewater anywhere with huge waves, and fun lines all over the place, with emerald water and an enjoyable character. The Canyon is like the upper but constricted and with a more serious character. The Raft-Run is awesome fun with big clean wave trains all over the place and Rearguard falls to keep the expert entertained. It is my favorite Grade 3 run. For those just starting out, or the canoeists among us, the Salmon Float section from the bottom of Fraser Canyon to the put-in for the Raft-Run offers scenic Grade 1-2 with awesome views of Mount Robson and amazing opportunities to see wildlife.
Why:
Fraser Fest was setup to ensure people are aware of this amazing river and valley. While the Fraser itself is relatively safe many of its tributaries are under pressure from logging and now micro-hydro developments. Basically we think this river is worth coming to see and so we've provided the venue to come down and enjoy it with other like minded paddlers.
