Bighorn River (Gr. 4)

Waterfalls and Grade 3.
The Scene: Lots of vertical and just off vertical drops interspersed with class two and three stretches.

Flow Information: Usually runs for most of the spring and late into the summer.

Transport Information: The Run is located between the junction, of Highway 93 and the David Thompson Highway, and the town of Nordegg. The take-out s just down stream of where the river flows under the David Thompson highway, on the river right hand side. To get to the put-in head back out to the highway and head back towards Nordegg. There will be a sign for Crescent falls and a road heading off the left side of the highway; follow this to the top and you will be a few hundred meters from the waterfall. The typical put-in is below the second waterfall.

The Fun: Portaging at water level is difficult on this run so be ready to run big drops or deal with brutal hikes or big seal launches. Crescent falls has, so far, just been a fantasy for most kayakers but it may be run one day. Curtain Call is the second waterfall; standing about fifty feet tall, it is definitely intimidating but also very runnable.

If you decide to put in below Curtain Call you will cruise some good class 3 warm up rapids on your way to Particle Accelerator. This drop looks pretty gnarly and has some potential to hand out a pretty good spanking. We have portaged this one on river left and seal launched into the pool below. If you want to run the drop, make sure that you have enough speed to clear the boil at the exit of the swirling pool. The next substantial drop is a ten, or so, foot ledge; School House is an easy ledge that can be scouted and boofed on the river right side. Following close behind is Freefall, an off vertical fall that is tones of fun at any flow besides flood. Scout on river left or river right, there are good eddies on either side. I think that the portage for this drop is way sketchier than the drop itself, with the exception of when the river is in flood.

A few more cruisy rapids lead you to Final Analysis, a super fun drop with a good lead in that will keep you on your toes. Scout on river left and pick your line according to how much you like your boat. River right is pretty vertical and the further left you go the more likely you are to bounce off a ledge half way down. From final analysis down the river eases off to the take out.
