Ellis Cucksey running a drop. |
| To get there: It’s Halfway between Nakusp, and the Ferry over to Revelstoke. The potential takeout is the highway bridge over this river. The put in would be up at the Hot springs. Description: The drop in the picture is just downstream of the hot spring. I actually put-in at the hot spring pool, and floated through the narrow gorge (looks like the Paliser above the put-in, but flat water) that you can see from the hot spring. Just down from there the flow bends around a corner. The rapid in the picture is right there. It's somewhat scout-able on the right at the flow I ran, and a portage at this point would be nearly impossible. Anyone running the drops should probably get a good look from up on the wall on the river-left bank before getting on the water. The drop consists of two ramps into holes. I took two runs (the carry back up just sucks...) and in each I ran the top part right of center. The left of the top drop plows into a headwall creating an impressive reaction pile. There was a small, somewhat calm but fast-moving pool in between drops. The second ramp is the one shown in the picture. That center line was the better of my two. I also tried down the far-left wall, but got flipped when I caught the wall at an awkward angle. There are a couple nasty parts to the hole at the bottom. Also, just to the right of my line in the picture, just in front of my right paddle blade, there's a nasty-looking potential pin spot. I don't know if there's any whitewater below that. From where I took out, maybe 30 meters below the drop, the river turns to class-II rock garden. It disappears around a corner from there, but I didn't explore further. Same thing upstream. | |
