| The Scene: An interesting run with lots of bedrock features, ranging from class 3-5. We hit this one too low, and all though it was paddle able, it was hardly spectacular. To get there: Cross the needles bay ferry, as though you were heading to the Whatshan. Follow the road further (Highway 6). The lowest takeout is where the creek flows under Highway 6 (although you can takeout various places along this one). The put-in we used was about 12km-20km? up from here, where the creek goes under the road, then drops off a small fall. This put in, was basically someone’s yard. He called it Angel Falls, and has a pop and ice cream stand, all though he wasn't serving hot dogs when we were there. Below here there are quite a few logs, and at this level, it was too scrapey, to enjoy. However, many notable bedrock features were encountered along the way. The biggest slide was probably 20 feet, and there was one notch/slot that was class 6 at this level. Higher water would make the run enjoyable, but much more difficult. A cool 3 step shoot leads you to the next fall of any size. It’s a bouncy 20 footer, which is pretty clean, as long as you don't piton towards the river left. A few minor drops exist below here then you reach Caldron Falls, which warrants a lot of caution. It is about 50-60 feet high, in two parts. The first lands in a narrow pothole/crack which when we were there re-circulated sticks terminally. At higher water, it might clean up, but I doubt it. It is basically a notch in the bedrock at the top, with high walls to either side. We had enough of the low water at this point. We portaged by scrambling to the brink of the falls, then scrambling up the rock on the right. We walked to the road from here, as the guidebook mentioned this as a possible takeout. It wasn't too far, it took only 10-15 minutes. I would love to paddle this entire creek with some water; it has a really cool character. Spencer Cox. | |
